JOURNEY TO CALVARY
The dream of St. Joseph Catholic Parish, Kerwa was realized 0n 5th December, 2021 when His Lordship Rt. Rev. David Kamau Ngángá, the Auxiliary Bishop of Nairobi Archdiocese arrived at St. Charles Lwanga station, Kari to grace the day. The day had many events, namely, blessing and inaugurating the prayer garden, conferring of the Sacraments of Confirmation and solemnizing marriage. The bishop began by blessing and inaugurating the prayer garden given the name “JOURNEY TO CALVARY”. Thereafter, he planted a memorial tree and began the celebration of the Holy Eucharist in which he administered sacraments of Confirmation and marriage to some of the parishioners. While breaking the Word of God, the Bishop inspired the faithful and urged them to have a strong faith in Jesus and take up their daily responsibilities as members of family. Moreover, he invited all Christians to visit this prayer garden and pray the way of Cross often.
I wish to narrate a short history about this prayer garden situated at kari station in Kerwa parish. The thought of setting up a prayer garden was mooted in 2012 and was included in the development plan of the Parish. This idea was inspired from the ‘Bible on the ground’ concept found in an outstation at the slopes of Mt Kenya in Nanyuki run by the Benedictines and the “way of the cross” at the Subukia shrine. The idea then was just to create a tortuous path through the existing forest of gum and wattle trees while creating stations along the path.
In June 2020, this idea was given a serious consideration under leadership of Fr Martin CMF. Christians supported the idea and cooperated to see the project succeeding. We are grateful that the idea has today become a reality. Indeed, we appreciate all who have devotedly contributed to completion of this good work.
